In the middle of the night, Lorena Bobbitt sliced off her abusive husband’s penis while he slept.

..I wanted to ask what it felt like to hold the amputated penis in her hand, drained of the blood that just minutes earlier had engorged it. So engorged, pulsing with power, it had penetrated her against her will, violated her, as it had on innumerable occasions previously (so said her lawyers).
What did it feel like to hold it in her hands, this power?

[...]

They say that people who are beheaded retain consciousness long enough to look longingly, horrifyingly back at their separated bodies. I wondered if Lorena thought John, in the hours he was without his dick, still saw himself as a man. Did he get a small sense of what it was like to be a girl? Highly doubtful, for he would never feel the compensatory inner space of a vagina. Lorena’s magical kitchen knife could never carve out that.

I wondered if Lorena had ever read Norman Mailer. I’m reading him now, such a macho man and braggard and anti-feminist. A jerk really. He apparently even took a knife — but not in self-defense like Lorena— to stab one of his many wives when he got pissed at her.

But the stuff he wrote about dicks is mildly interesting. His take on dicks is that it’s their nature to poke and prod around, like a bug’s antennae, checking out things, knocking girls up, knocking competitors down, constantly looking outward into the world. Their dicks are their eyes and ears, even their arms and legs, in the way they experience things. And for Mailer himself, he wielded his cock like a writer’s pen — or a knife.
